Alfriston School, Auckland
Being a school educational facility, the requirement for solid, durable and chemical free timber with a relatively smooth surface for children to play and rest against made the choice to use Ironwood Hardwood Sleepers simple. The biophilic design gave the “The Hug”, its nickname and resulted in a fantastic display of simplicity in both design and function that provides safety and peace for children.
Biophilic design is the deliberate attempt to translate an understanding of the inherent human affinity to affiliate with natural systems and processes—known as biophilia—into the design of the built environment.
This simple design of this project utilised the space and gave new life to the reclaimed timbers.
