Living Future Institute:

Living Building Challenge, using recycled or salvaged natural materials earns you credits/points on your application. Sustainability is not only about the environment, it is all-encompassing of design, social impacts, efficiency and the health and happiness of the people that will inhabit the building. This is an ideology also held by the Living Future Institute.

The Living Building Challenge™ is the built environment’s most rigorous performance standard, internationally recognised and accepted.

It calls for the creation of building projects at all scales and locations to operate as cleanly, beautifully & efficiently as nature’s architecture would. To be certified under the Challenge, projects must meet a series of ambitious performance requirements over a minimum of 12 months of continuous occupancy.’

NZGBC: Greenstar & Home Star.

Green Star is an internationally recognised rating system for the design, construction and operation of buildings, fit-outs and communities. Supporting stakeholders in the property and construction sectors to design, build and operate projects in a more sustainable, efficient and productive way. It provides tenants with a trusted mark of independent verification to support reliable decision-making.

Homestar is a comprehensive, independent national rating tool for design and compulsory build grading. Organised by the not-for-profit (NZ) Green Building Council, that measures the health, warmth and efficiency of New Zealand houses. A home is rated on a scale from 6 to 10 and is rated according to physical performance of the building.

In the Greenstar application you can be awarded up to 2 points for using 90% of either:

  • Reused timber
  • Post-consumer recycled timber.

Independently certified as having lower environmental impact than standard timber, as verified through a materials certification body recognized by the NZGBC (a list of approved eco-labels are available on the NZGBC website).

You can also be awarded one more point if the timber does not exceed the minimum treatment standards.
